Mutta tässä, sanoisin, näissä Jeanninen kysymyksissä, piileekin villakoiran varsinainen ydin: ne syyt joita ihmisillä on antaa arvoa asioille ovat äärimmäisen arveluttavia; se on, jos kysymys Miksi? esitetään kyllin usein, havaitaan, että viimeinen päämäärä (joka, mikä on muistettava, antaa koko ketjulle sen arvon) on järjellä puolustamaton, loogisesti perustelematon.

Asian ydin on siinä, että jos-keino, erinomainen silloin kun tahtoo tehdä arvoarvostelmista päätelmiä, on puolustettavissa ainoastaan siihen asti kun näitä josia ei aseteta kyseenalaisiksi. Ne syyt joilla ihmiset panevat arvoa asioihin ovat aina lopulta (jos kohta eivät välttämättä välittömästi) arveluttavia, irrationaaleja.

Lyhyesti sanoen, ei ole mitään lopullista syytä sanoa mitään tärkeäksi tai arvokkaaksi; ei mitään lopullista syytä asettaa jotakin asiaa toisen edelle.

Ensiksikin, minulla on lisää sanomista prinssi Hamletista. Lisäisin vielä, että jos hän haluaa osakseen minun kunnioitukseni, hänen valintansa elämän puolesta täytyy perustua varmemmalle pohjalle kuin Hamletilla- että ‘omatunto tekee meistä kaikista pelkureita’: että itsemurhan valitseminen on tuntemattoman pahan valitsemista tunnetun sijasta. History, the proverb says is made at night. The European civil servant normally sleeps at night. What waits in his IN basket to confront him at nine in the morning is history. He doesn’t fight it, he tries to coexist with it.

He had decided a long ago that no Situation had any objective reality: it only existed in the minds of those who happened to be in on it at any specific moment. Since these several minds tended to form a sum total or complex more mongrel than homogenous, The Situation must necessarily appear to a single observer much like diagram in four dimensions to an eye conditioned to seeing its world in only three.

Hence the success or failure of any diplomatic issue must vary directly with the degree of rapport achieved by the team confronting it.

Until last year along came theFashoda crisis and quite early one morning Covess was discovered in spats and a pith helmet, working his way around Piccadilly trying to recruit volunteers to invade France. Stencil remembered painfully that they all had been singing Onward, Christian Soldiers in various key and tempi.

Perhaps history this century, thought Eigenvalue, is rippled with gathers in its fabric such that if we are situated, as Stencil seemed to be, at the bottom of the fold, it’s impossible to determine warp, woof or pattern anywhere else.

By virtue, however, of existing in one gather it is assumed there are others, compartemented off into sinuous cycles each of which come to assume greater importance than the weave itself and destroy any continuity. Thus it is that we are charmed by the funny-looking automobiles of the ’30s, the curious fashions of the ’20s, the peculiar moral habits our grandparents.

We produce and attend musical comedies about them and are connected into a false memory, a phony nostalgia about what they were. We are accordingly lost to any sense of continous tradition. Perhaps if we lived on a crest, things would be different. We could at least see.

While at Anthroresearch Profane listened with half an ear to the coffee percolating; and carried on another imaginary conversation with SHROUD. By now that had become a tradition.

Remember, Profane, how it is on Route 14, souths, outside Elmira, New York? You walk on an overpass and look west and see the sun setting on a junkpile. Acres of old cars, piled up ten high in rusting tiers. A graveyard for cars. If I could die, that’s what my graveyard would look like.

“I wish you would. Look at you, masquerading like a human being. You ought to be junked. Not burned or cremated.”

Of course. Like a human being. Now remember, right after the war, the Nuremberg war trials? Remember the photographs of Auschwitz? Thousands of Jewish corpses, stacked up like those poor car-bodies. Schlemihl: It’s already started.

“Hitler did that. He was crazy.”

Hitler, Eichmann, Mengele. Fifteen years ago. Has it occurred to you there may be no more standards for crazy or sane, now that it’s started?
